Stromboli Island

Stromboli, located just north of Sicily, is one of seven islands that comprise the Aeolian Islands. Numerous Panettieri family bloodlines worldwide extend back to Stromboli.

According to Aeolian Island Cemeteries (a searchable database), the Stromboli Cemetery and the Stromboli Vecchio (“Old”) Cemetery include such graves as:

  • Angelina Panettieri (November 2, 1873 to December 29,1950)

  • Caterina Picone (August 5, 1903 to August 30, 1946), daughter of Angela Panettieri (1873-1950): Born In Stromboli, she died in Messina. Apparently buried next to mother Angela Panettieri.

  • Maria Panettieri (born March 16, 1890 – died March 31, 1964)

  • Maria Panettieri (born August 3, 1888 – died February 2, 1986) is also interred in Stromboli Cemetery.

  • Vincenzo Panettieri (born October 20, 1901 – died April 12, 1902) is buried in Stromboli Vecchio (OLD) Cemetery.

Finding Family Records

Here are some key information sources to help you search ancestry records in Stromboli:

  1. FamilySearch.org: A free account gives you access to Italian records. For Stromboli-related records, search for “Lipari” or “Messina”. There, you can find Birth (Nati), Marriage (Matrimoni) and Death (Morti) records. The site hosts a collection titled "Registri ecclesiastici di Lipari (Messina), 1559–1913",

  2. Ancestors Portal of Italy: Known as Antenati Portal, this is the official archive of Italian civil records. To search the Stromboli area, first choose “Archivio di Stato di Messina.” Then, look under “Lipari” since Stromboli falls under it. Records usually span 1809 to 1943 or so.

  3. Civil Registry Office for the Comune di Lipari, Italy: This office is responsible for registering births, deaths, marriages, and other records for residents of the Lipari area — which includes Stromboli.

  4. FamilySearch hosts a collection titled "Registri ecclesiastici di Lipari (Messina), 1559–1913", which includes Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths

  5. For records before 1820, you’ll want parish registers. Stromboli’s churches include:
